What the Research Discovered

The study, published in the Journal of Periodontology, analyzed data from 200 hospital patients using the King’s College London Oral, Dental and Craniofacial Biobank. Researchers examined comprehensive dental evaluations, blood samples, and detailed dietary questionnaires.[2]

The results were striking: participants who adhered most closely to Mediterranean diet principles demonstrated superior gum health and significantly reduced inflammation levels. Conversely, those who didn’t follow this eating pattern showed more severe gum disease symptoms, compromised gum health, and elevated inflammation markers—particularly pronounced among high red meat consumers.[3]

While previous studies have explored the connection between Mediterranean eating patterns and oral health, this research provides some of the most compelling evidence to date.[4] However, researchers acknowledge the study establishes association rather than causation, and larger sample sizes would strengthen future findings.[5]

How Mediterranean Eating Supports Oral Health

Gum disease affects approximately 40% of American adults over 30, making it a significant public health concern.[6] 

The condition typically develops when inadequate brushing and flossing allows plaque accumulation along the gumline, triggering inflammatory responses as the body fights harmful bacteria.[7]

“The Mediterranean diet provides abundant anti-inflammatory nutrients—including antioxidants, fiber, and beneficial fats that help regulate immune system responses,” Nibali explains. “In contrast, diets heavy in processed foods and red meat tend to increase inflammation, potentially worsening gum tissue damage and accelerating disease progression.”

While current evidence doesn’t definitively prove that adopting a Mediterranean diet prevents gum disease, it serves as a valuable tool for reducing systemic inflammation throughout the body, notes Beatriz Bezerra, DDS, PhD, associate clinical professor and director of the predoctoral program in Periodontics at UCLA School of Dentistry.

“Consistent dental checkups, daily brushing and flossing, combined with healthy lifestyle practices—including anti-inflammatory nutrition—can help minimize both the development and severity of gum disease,” she emphasizes.
