How Many People Have Gotten Sick From Listeria?
The numbers are alarming. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 20 people across 15 states have contracted the dangerous Listeria strain linked to this outbreak.[4]
The devastating health impact includes:
- 19 hospitalizations requiring immediate medical care
- 4 confirmed deaths in Illinois, Michigan, Texas, and Utah
- 1 pregnancy loss due to Listeria infection
The CDC warns that actual case numbers are likely much higher. Many people recover without seeking medical treatment or don’t report their illness, meaning the true scope of this outbreak may be significantly underreported.[5]
What You Should Do
Act immediately if you’ve purchased any affected meals from Walmart, Trader Joe’s, or Kroger:
- Check your refrigerator and freezer right now and dispose of any matching products immediately, or return them for a refund
- Thoroughly clean all surfaces that may have contacted these products—Listeria bacteria can survive in cold temperatures and spread easily throughout your kitchen
- Sanitize refrigerator shelves, containers, and utensils that came into contact with the contaminated meals
Watch for These Dangerous Symptoms
If you consumed any potentially contaminated meals, monitor yourself closely for Listeria infection symptoms—particularly if you’re pregnant, over 65, or have a compromised immune system. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience:[6]
- High fever
- Severe muscle aches
- Extreme fatigue
- Persistent headaches
- Neck stiffness
- Mental confusion
- Balance problems
- Seizures or convulsions
Timeline: Symptoms typically appear within two weeks of consuming contaminated food, but can manifest anywhere from the same day to 10 weeks later.
This is a serious public health emergency. Take immediate action to protect yourself and your loved ones by checking your kitchen and staying alert for symptoms.
